(AP) ? The number of people applying for U.S. unemployment benefits fell last week for the first time in five weeks. But the drop suggests only modest job growth after three months of weak hiring.

The Labor Department said Thursday that applications for weekly benefits dropped by 12,000 to a seasonally adjusted 377,000. That's down from an upwardly revised 389,000 the previous week.

The four-week average, a less volatile measure, rose by 1,750 to 377,500, the highest level in a month.

Applications are a measure of the pace of layoffs. When claims dip below 375,000, it typically suggests hiring is strong enough to reduce the unemployment rate. They have hovered near that level for most of the year after declining sharply last fall.

"Although the labor market appears to have stabilized, and is stronger than it was in 2011, it is not particularly robust," Steven A. Wood, chief economist at Insight Economics wrote in a note to clients.

The government last week reported that employers added just 69,000 jobs in May, the fewest in a year. The unemployment rate rose to 8.2 percent from 8.1 percent in April.

Job growth averaged a decent 252,000 a month from December through February. That helped lower the unemployment rate from 9.1 percent in August.

But hiring has slowed in the past three months to an average 96,000 a month.

The number of people receiving benefits is falling, partly because extended benefit programs are ending in many states. About 6 million people received benefits in the week ended May 19, the latest data available. That's a drop of 167,000 from the previous week.

The economy is still struggling three years after the recession officially ended in June 2009. Wages haven't kept up with inflation, pinching consumer spending. State and local governments have continued to shed jobs.

The government reported last week that the economy grew at a sluggish annual rate of 1.9 percent the first three months of 2012, which is consistent with monthly job growth of around 90,000.

The United States has regained less than 3.8 million, or 43 percent, of the 8.8 million jobs lost during and immediately after the recession.

There have been some signs this week that hiring could improve.

A Labor Department report Wednesday suggested that companies may have to start hiring if business picks up: U.S. worker productivity fell by the largest amount in a year from January through March. The drop signals that companies are struggling to squeeze more out of their existing staffs.

And the Federal Reserve issued an update economic report Wednesday, saying that the economy grew modestly across most of the United States this spring. The Fed survey shows growth in each of its 12 bank districts from April 3 through May 25. Growth picked up in 10 districts. It was steady in the Boston district and slowed in the Philadelphia region.

'A Christmas Story' aims to open on Broadway

(AP) ? Producers are looking for actors, singers and dancers who stand no more than 4-foot-11 to fill the shoes of Ralphie and his friends as they prepare a musical version of the classic film "A Christmas Story" for Broadway.

Performances begin Nov. 6 in New York with an opening night set for Nov. 19. The musical spent much of last year on a national tour.

The show has more than a dozen catchy songs written by Benj Pasek and composer Justin Paul, with titles including "Red Ryder Carbine Action BB Gun" and "A Major Award."

Both the 1983 film and musical are based the story of 9-year-old Ralphie Parker's desperate attempt to land an air rifle as a Christmas gift, despite warnings that he'll shoot his eye out.

Screen Shot 2012-06-06 at 12.25.57 AMIndiegogo, the website that allows people to contribute money to the causes, artistic projects, and small companies they support, has attracted a good amount of success in the four years since it was founded in early 2008. In the process, it's even helped to put the concept of "crowdfunding" into the mainstream. But Indiegogo is officially making it clear that it's aiming to make an even bigger impact -- and the company has closed on $15 million in funding to do so.

Bernanke has few options as economy slows

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke will appear before Congress' Joint Economic Committee Thursday morning.

By Martin Wolk

Updated at 2:25 p.m. ET: Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke is likely to express deep concern about the deteriorating global economy Thursday, but it?s not clear he can do much about it.

After nearly four years of pumping trillions of dollars into the economy through unprecedented easing of monetary policy, Bernanke and his colleagues appear increasingly divided over the wisdom of doing much more.

Bernanke will make his views clear in an appearance on Capitol Hill Thursday. Several central bankers have expressed reluctance to take further action even after last week?s dismal U.S. employment report and a growing economic crisis that has thrown the future of the eurozone into question.

Dallas Fed President Richard Fisher said Fed policymakers "must keep their heads about them" after the rash of weak data and resist trying to solve economic problems with more monetary stimulus. "Short of an implosion, I cannot support further quantitative easing," he said in a speech in Scotland.

James Bullard, president of the St. Louis Fed, took a more wait-and-see attitude. ?The outlook for 2012 has not changed significantly so far,? he said in a speech.

"A change in U.S. monetary policy at this juncture will not alter the situation in Europe,? he added.

While Bullard and Fisher currently have no vote on the Fed?s policymaking Open Market Committee, their comments echo those of voting member Sandra Pianalto, president of the Cleveland Fed, who also has not seen enough to convince her that further policy action is required.

"I don't think this employment report, in and of itself, is likely to lead to a substantial change in my outlook,? she told The Wall Street Journal. ?Consequently, it would not lead me, at this time, given what I know about my outlook, to change my position on policy."

On the other side is Charles Evans, president of the Chicago Fed, who said the employment report has only increased his conviction that the Fed needs to act.

"With huge resource gaps, slow growth and low inflation, the economic circumstances warrant extremely strong accommodation," Evans said this week in remarks prepared for delivery to the Money Marketeers of New York University. ?Failure to act aggressively now will lower the capacity of the economy for many years to come."

The crisis in Europe is largely beyond the ability of U.S. policymakers to control but has created growing nervousness on financial markets. Stock prices, which have been under heavy pressure, soared Wednesday in part on news that European policymakers were working on plans to rescue Spain?s banks, although Madrid has not yet requested such assistance.

But while the European crisis must be resolved in Europe, the Fed has a dual mandate to keep inflation low while maximizing employment.

On that front there is little for Bernanke to be proud of. While the unemployment rate has gradually dropped from a peak of 10 percent in 2009 to its current 8.2 percent, job growth has all but stalled.

After adding more than 500,000 jobs in the first two months of this year the economy has added a mere 289,000 in the past three months, not even enough to keep up with the nation?s growing working-age population, much less lower the unemployment rate.

To be clear, the U.S. economy has not fallen off a cliff. The Fed's Beige Book report released Wednesday, to be used as a guide at the June 19-20 meeting of policymakers, describes economic growth showing signs of "modest increase."

In any case, the question is what more the Fed can do.?Short?term interest rates already are near zero, as they have been since December 2008. The Fed already has promised to keep interest rates at current exceptionally low levels ?at least through late 2014.?

The options are limited. The most aggressive action discussed, another round of so-called quantitative easing, would involve the central bank buying billions of dollars worth of long-term securities, bringing down longer-term interest rates. Rates on 30-year mortgages already are at record lows, typically under 4 percent, and analysts do not expect the Fed to announce such a move when they meet later in the month.

Another less aggressive bond-buying program, dubbed Operation Twist, is due to end this month although the Fed could extend or modify it.

So-called Fed ?hawks,? like Fisher, worry about the potential for sparking inflation down the road if the Fed continues its highly aggressive easy-money policy.

Tony Crescenzi, a longtime Fed watcher and portfolio manager for bond giant Pimco, says Bernanke and fellow policymakers are likely to keep using the central bank?s ?bully pulpit?? to signal their willingness to act if needed, despite the obstacles.

?I think as long as they convey that idea, that they will do more and that they are activists, whether or not they act it won?t be immediately consequential to markets,? he said.

One factor working in the favor of so-called ?doves? like Evans, is that inflation does not seem to be a major threat right now, especially with oil prices tumbling.

online deals - Creating a Bamboo Wind Break Helps Save Money

Any yard or garden space can be given a tropical feeling through the use of bamboo while saving the homeowner or tenant money. Bamboo creates wind breaks and shade, which reduces energy bills for heating and cooling. It is relatively inexpensive and can be used to increase backyard privacy without putting up a picket fence. Premade bamboo fencing and poles can be used to help csover structural outdoor elements and can be accented through the use of live plants. The right type of soil and climate are important for these plants to flourish, as is a little bit of skill for the first-time planter. Here are some basics on preparing a garden or wind break.

Equipment For the rookie gardener, it is important to have some basic equipment, such as a shovel, hoe, rake, gardening gloves and garden hose. These can be bought from any home improvement store or discount department store. Some offer online deals through discount coupons and coupon codes. A watering can can be used instead of a hose, but it is more labor intensive.

Time Growing bamboo can actually be rather easy if the plants are cultivated correctly and planted in the correct way. The shoots develop very vigorously when properly cared for and can grow several inches in a single day. This means that a natural wall or covering can be grown in just a few weeks or months. The quick shade will provide reduced energy bills in time for the hottest months of the year.

Climate Bamboo trees favor climates that are warm or tropical. Extreme climates with a short growing season or low rainfall totals will yield unhappy plants that might not grow as expected. The leaves and shoots are most productive in partial shade. This means that there should be a few hours of indirect sunlight each day so that the heat does not burn the plants. Using bamboo fencing or temporary tarps to create partial shade can greatly help seedlings to grow more aggressively. It is important that the leaves receive direct sunlight for at least half of the day.

Soil Almost all bamboos favor sandy or loam soil. Areas that have unusually dense or clay soil should have the area prepared first. This can involve tilling the soil and then mixing in sand, mulch or other loose organic materials. The root system needs some moisture in the soil. The bulk of the water in the area, however, should be allowed to drain so that it is clear of the roots to prevent rot from occurring. Rocks or biodegradable mats buried under the soil can help to create a drainage path for the water. These are also available at the local home improvement or discount department store. The material will break down and become mulch over the years that will keep the soil light. Rocks will provide a continual source of drainage.

Protection The bamboo trees need to be protected from the wind when first planted. This is because the root system is very shallow at first and is not able to support the weight of the fast growing shoots in strong wind. Light fencing or tarps can be used to create a temporary shelter for the young plants. Proper spacing of the seedlings will allow the plants to grow and expand over the years to create a dense patch. Each plant should be spaced anywhere from 36 to 60 inches from neighboring shoots. The roots will send out runners as the plant matures that can potentially harm other roots that are within this range. Eventually, they will create their own shade and wind breaks.

'Hannibal' the TV series casts its villain

The 'Hannibal' TV series on NBC has cast a former James Bond villain as its titular character.

By Sandy Schaefer,?Screen Rant / June 5, 2012

Actor Mads Mikkelsen has previously starred as the main villain, Le Chiffre, in the well-received 2006 James Bond film 'Casino Royale.'

It?s taken a while, but NBC and showrunner Bryan Fuller (the creator of Pushing Daisies) have finally settled on an actor to portray Hannibal ?The Cannibal? Lecter, M.D., in their upcoming television series, Hannibal.

The man in question is Mads Mikkelsen, the Danish thespian who broke out onto the Hollywood scene with his turn as the villain (with a bleeding eye) in Casino Royale. Mikkelsen was also recently approached to play an antagonist in Thor 2; his being locked down for Hannibal suggests that might no longer be an option.

Mikkelsen will play Dr. Lecter opposite fellow King Arthur alum, Hugh Dancy, who will portray FBI profiler Will Graham on Fuller?s Hannibal. The Lecter/Graham duo originated in Thomas Harris? 1981 novel ?Red Dragon,? which was the basis for Michael Mann?s Manhunter ? featuring Brian Cox and William Petersen as the pair ? along with Brett Ratner?s Red Dragon, which saw Anthony Hopkins and Edward Norton try their hands at bringing those respective characters to life (a third time, in Hopkins? case).

When Fuller previously spoke to EW, he revealed that Hannibal begins prior to the events in Red Dragon. Moreover, the show starts off by portraying Lecter?as ?more of a peacock [with] a cheery disposition? He?s not being telegraphed as a villain.?If the audience didn?t know who he was, they wouldn?t see him coming? We get to subvert his legacy and give the audience twists and turns.?

That makes the selection of Mikkelsen as Dr. Lecter only partial type-casting, as the actor is better known for portraying characters whose external appearance very much reflect their dangerous nature ? be it the eye-patch-wearing Count de Rochefort in The Three Musketeers or the Viking ?One Eye? in Valhalla Rising. (Mikkelsen does seem to have a thing for playing villains with eye issues, doesn?t he? Moving on?)

David Slade (30 Days of Night, Eclipse) is locked to direct the pilot for Hannibal, which Fuller will serve as an executive producer on, alongside the owner of the screen rights to the Hannibal Lecter character, Martha De Laurentis, and such television vets as Jesse Alexander (Lost), Sara Colleton (Dexter) and Katie O? Connell.

If all goes according to (Fuller?s) plan, then Mikkelsen will be playing Dr. Lecter on the small screen for the next seven years. Of course, that depends in no small part on how receptive viewers are to his take on the infamous, suave, serial killer. Also, NBC?s willingness to not cancel Hannibal prematurely, which is something many people have already voiced their doubt about (and with good reason).

For our money: Mikkelsen is a great actor, and his being cast as Dr. Lecter gives us reason to check out the pilot for Hannibal?(regardless of what NBC does).?That?s to say nothing of the additional personnel working behind-the-scenes on this show, which looks to borrow some of the best plot/character elements found in fan-fave series like Dexter and Sherlock. (Intriguing, for sure.)

We will let you know when Hannibal secures an official premiere date.
