"Bridesmaids", "The Help" among Writers Guild nominations (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? "Bridesmaids", "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" and "The Help" were among the movie nominees for the Writers Guild Awards (WGA) on Thursday in a surprise list of omissions and dark horses.

"The Descendants" and Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris" also earned screenplay nominations. But likely Oscar contenders "War Horse" and political drama "The Ides of March" failed to gain a mention while French silent movie "The Artist" was ineligible under WGA rules.

Instead cancer dark comedy "50/50", and "Young Adult" picked up nominations for best original screenplay, along with the little-seen indy drama "Win Win" starring Paul Giamatti as a high school wrestling coach.

The Martin Scorsese film "Hugo", and "Moneyball" rounded out the 10 nominations for adapted and original screenplays.

The Writers Guild Awards will be handed out at ceremonies in New York and Los Angeles on February 19.

Israel's religion minister fears Jewish divides (Reuters)

JERUSALEM (Reuters) ? Israeli society could be torn apart if disputes between ultra-Orthodox and less observant Jews continue to heat up, Israel's religious affairs minister said on Wednesday.

In a telephone interview, Yaacov Margy, who also serves as director-general of Shas, a religious party in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition government, condemned an incident last month in which zealots seeking gender separation spat at a schoolgirl they accused of dressing immodestly.

That attack was disclosed by an Israeli television station, whose report on the violence stunned many in the Jewish state, where concerns over religious coercion are mounting among its mainly secular population.

Margy said such incidents and ultra-Orthodox protests - in the latest, on Saturday, children were dressed as Nazi Holocaust victims to suggest public persecution of the community - had been overblown in the media.

"If they ganged up on an 8-year-old girl, this is something that must be uprooted. We have a police force, courts - anyone who is violent must be dealt with. But we don't have to go crazy," he said.

Margy accused media outlets of fuelling the religious-secular dispute by covering in detail ultra-Orthodox protests.

"If we have a problem in Israeli society we should deal with it through dialogue," he said. "I call on all people in the media and the extremists on both sides, crazy people: 'climb down off the roof'."

He said he feared that failure to do so "will tear Israeli society apart," and pointed to banners at a recent secular demonstration where protesters voiced their fear that Israel could become like Islamist-ruled Iran.

"Every morning I go to look at the window and check whether I see some pro-Khomeini protest at my doorstep," he said referring to the religious leader who led the 1979 Iranian revolution. "All I see are green fields, a good atmosphere and good neighbors."

That view contrasts sharply with a cautionary note sounded last month by Israeli President Shimon Peres who said the country was in the grip of a battle for its soul.

BACK OF THE BUS

An emotional national debate has been raging over issues such attempts to segregate sidewalks in areas where devout Jews live and back-of-the-bus seating for women on public buses that ply religious neighborhoods and which are patronized by ultra-Orthodox passengers.

Turning to coalition politics in which his Shas party has traditionally been a king-maker, Margy said he was "very disappointed" in Netanyahu's right-wing government, where a major partner has promoted contentious legislation governing marriage.

The bill introduced by Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman's Yisrael Beitenu party would give Israelis a freer hand at choosing rabbis to register them for marriage.

Jewish marriage in Israel is administered by Orthodox rabbis, whose refusal to register mixed couples poses difficulties for Yisrael Beitenu's considerable Russian immigrant constituency, some of whom are not Jewish according to ritual law.

"Nobody expects the Jewish state to permit mixed marriages," Margy said.

With 11 lawmakers in Netanyahu's 66-member coalition, Shas has enough sway to stand up and be heard as it helps assure the government of majority support in Israel's 120-seat legislature.

The next parliamentary election is not due until 2013, but Netanyahu has scheduled an early Likud leadership ballot for January 31, raising speculation the date of a national vote might be brought forward.

Nate Diaz wins UFC 141 grudge match with Donald Cerrone

Nate Diaz wins UFC 141 grudge match with Donald Cerrone

After plenty of smack talk, Nate Diaz delivered a three-round beating of Donald Cerrone, winning by decision 30-27, 30-27, 29-28.

The battle started before the fight even began. When the two came to the center of the Octagon for fight instructions, Cerrone flashed Diaz the middle finger when told to touch gloves. "You can touch gloves ... or not," referee Herb Dean said.

[ Related: Kevin Iole's complete UFC 141 recap ]

They started throwing immediately, with Diaz trying for the takedown. Cerrone pushed him off and landed a punch on the way out. Diaz found his rhythm, and landed more strikes early in the bout. Cerrone responded later on with kicks, but Diaz gave the majority of punishment.

With a bloodied and bruised face, Cerrone responded with leg kicks that put Diaz on the ground twice early in the second round. A head kick then put Diaz on the ground, and another leg kick did the same. Under the two-minute mark, Diaz began to throw the punches that made him successful in the first. Though Cerrone continued to use kicks, Diaz wobbled Cerrone late in the round.

As he waited to start the third round, Diaz flashed both middle fingers at Cerrone. He was confident heading into the round with good reason. Diaz continued to land combinations, and was not bothered by Cerrone's leg sweep. They traded punches furiously for the rest of the round, but did shake hands as soon as the final horn sounded.

Compustrike estimated that Diaz landed 258 strikes to Cerrone's 66.

"I train hard, I've got good training partners," Diaz said after the fight. "I hope I didn't look too sloppy. I'm glad I got the win."

The fight had plenty of build-up, as Diaz had been insulted by Cerrone trying to shake his hand at a UFC event. It culminated with the two getting into a scuffle at the pre-fight press conference. After the bout, both men apologized and congratulated each other.

Diaz finished the year with two wins, and has a record of 15-7. Cerrone fought five times in 2011, going 4-1. His record fell to 17-4.

Former Mexico soldier sentenced for aiding cartels (Reuters)

MEXICO CITY, Dec 30 (Reuters) ? A former soldier in the Mexican army was sentenced to 25 years in prison for aiding drug cartels, the attorney general's office said on Friday.

Reymundo Morales of the Mexican infantry was arrested two years ago and found guilty of passing information to drug cartels, the attorney general's office said in a statement.

Local media said that Morales and several colleagues in uniform were passing information about security operations to the powerful Sinaloa drug cartel, led by Joaquin 'Shorty' Guzman, Mexico's most-wanted man.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon has said he is determined to root out corruption among the security forces as they take on violent drug cartels in a battle that has left more than 46,000 people dead since he took office in 2006.

Few officials have been convicted for crimes to date, though early last month, fourteen soldiers were sentenced to jail for firing at a family group in 2007 in one of the more prominent cases of wrongdoing among the security services.
